Pygmy Seahorse

This year, get more in touch with the natural world. Get a head start on your resolution by learning about just a few of the 213 new species added to the tree of life by Academy researchers this year.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Why describe new species? Dr. Shannon Bennett, virologist and the Academy’s Chief of Science, is here to remind us that there’s a wealth of diverse species in the world that we don’t know much about (including our new constant companion, SARS-CoV-2), and that learning about them is a critical step in sustaining the planet.

  • Together, Curator of Invertebrate Zoology Dr. Terry Gosliner and grad student Lynn Bonomo described four new (beautiful) Chromodoris sea slugs from the Indo-Pacific this year. They’ll give a crash course in what it takes to describe new species, how to do it, and how to name a nudibranch.

  • Meet Africa’s first pygmy seahorse species: Hippocampus nalu. Researcher Graham Short joins us with plenty of images and video of this rice-sized seahorse  to talk about how it was found, why it’s important, and what’s in a name.

All NightLife virtual programming is intended for audiences 21+.
