Calling all future gastropod enthusiasts: We're exploring the wide world of snails, from venomous ocean-dwellers to garden-loving city inhabitants.

Featuring:

  • Dr. Mandë Holford, Associate Professor in Chemistry at CUNY Hunter College and Academy Fellow, shares her work investigating how venom—in this case, that of killer sea snails—could change the field of medicine and beyond.

  • Gastropods are the largest group of mollusks, with over 62,000 described living species. Chrissy Piotrowski, the Academy’s Invertebrate Zoology Collections Manager, shows off the stunning diversity of snails: From tiny to huge, round to conical, and delicate to durable, the collections have it all.

  • Dr. Jann Vendetti, Associate Curator & Twila Bratcher Chair in Malacology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, introduces us to the biodiversity right under our feet (city snails!) and how a community science project (appropriately called SLIME) is on the quest to document and understand the snails close to home.

All NightSchool virtual programming is intended for audiences 21+.
