Bioblitzes are gatherings of scientists, community scientists, land managers, and more, all working together to find and identify as many different species as possible. Bioblitzes not only help land managers build a species list and atlas for their park and provide invaluable data for researchers, they also highlight the incredible biodiversity in these Bay Area oases.
Our bioblitzes are open to anyone and are family-friendly. Just bring your smartphone with the iNaturalist app, your curiosity, and your powers of observation to help catalog the natural wonders of our parks and open spaces.

Take the 2023 California Biodiversity Week Challenge: Find 30 Species for CA 30x30!
September 2-10, can you document 30 wild species in California? Participating is easy!
- Join the project (click "join" in the upper right corner!).
- Download the iNaturalist app on your phone.
- During CA Biodiversity Week, find and photograph at least 30 wild species in California. Your observations will automatically end up in the project!
Your observations of plants, animals, fungi, and other species in California will help inform the California 30x30 initiative, to conserve 30% of California's lands and coastal waters by 2030. Go out and explore your neighborhood or local park, take a hike or explore the coast, or join in one of the many CA Biodiversity Week events being held across the state!

Saturday, September 9: Effie Yeaw Biodiversity Day Bioblitz
Join us for an exciting Biodiversity Day Event hosted by Effie Yeaw Nature Center, the California Natural Resources Agency, the California Academy of Sciences, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. We will explore the beautiful trails and riverfront around Effie Yeaw Nature Center while adding our observations of nature to iNaturalist. We'll spend a couple of hours exploring the trails for trees, flowers, deer, birds, fungi, fish... everything!
We will also be joined by special guest, Dr. Jen Norris, Deputy Secretary for Biodiversity and Habitat at the California Natural Resources Agency!

The work we do utilizes iNaturalist to make biodiversity observations while building community around nature. It's a community-powered website and app that makes it easy to upload and share your observations in the field and to get help from other users with flora and fauna IDs.
